The food world is at odds. On one hand, you have the farm-to-table movement, which focuses on high-quality, locally-grown food sourced from small, family-run farms. On the other hand, you have scientists and geneticists looking at ways to feed the earth’s population, which is projected to surpass 11 billion people before the end of this century.

Both aims are noble, but you can’t feed increasingly large cities with only local produce. Vincent Kimura and his team at Smart Yields, however, hope to give smaller farmers a chance to try.

Smart Yields is a cloud-based software product which uses a combination of analytics and in-field monitoring devices to help small- and mid-size farmers increase their output. By using sensors to measure, predict, and alert farmers to current and trending environmental conditions, Smart Yields hopes to provide them with insights to help protect crops and increase yields.
